Life is not fair

I often complain that life is not fair. For example, I often ask why must I be the one to change and not to the others. Why does it have to be me who adjust? Why others can get the same treatment as I do. If somebody asked me to change, I will ask them to change as well. In short, I want things to be fair.

But the world is not fair. There are so many different situations that we cannot apply the same rule. Worse, the rewards of something may not be immediate. People who did wrong get benefits while people who do the right thing does not perform. I also enjoyed this kind of situations where I studied little but got great results in the past while my friend is struggling to score even after studying a lot.

Today is a sad day to me, it is a shocking day to hear that Ahok is given two years of jail. Even worse, he needs to serve the term immediately today instead of being given some period of time. And he is officially still a governor. How can they immediately do this? Why didn’t they give this at start instead of now after wasting a lot of time both in the court and in letting Ahok to campaign and compete in two rounds of election.

I then remember what Jesus said that we are also called to experience the unfairness He has encountered. He did nothing wrong and yet He was arrested. Barabas was let free while He was sentenced to death. All these do not make sense.

Similarly, a lot of corruptors are still outside, even murderers. But there is this Ahok whose statement is twisted, now have to experience how it is to be behind bars, separated from his wife and children.

So the question, does it make sense to expect that life is fair?

At the same time, look at them. I often say to myself, I can’t stand this unfairness as if the world will collapse. But look at Jesus. Look at Ahok. They still move on. It is sad, very sad indeed, but they can still look at life positively because they know that God is in control. Just like in the Psalms, at a glance, we see that there is no justice, the wrongdoers become prosper while the righteous suffer. One thing to note is that God is not silent forever. He will show justice for sure. Even if it does not happen in my life time or if it does not happen in this life. But for sure, justice is going to be there in eternity. So do not lose hope, be courages, do not be dismayed, for God will uphold us with His righteous right hand.
